Hello! My name is Sean Ryan Balsillie, known to many friends and Kingston locals as Sean from the Yukon. As the name suggests, I was born in Whitehorse, Yukon, and I lived there until I was 17 years old, before coming to Queen’s University. I am currently wrapping up my Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering, expecting to graduate this Spring!
Alongside my work as an engineering undergrad, I have spent a lot of time & energy establishing myself as a local musician. Singing and playing guitar are my greatest passions, and over the last few years at Queen’s I’ve heavily involved myself in the music community. Through on campus clubs like the Vogue Charity Fashion Show, several independent rock bands, and my own solo project (Sean from the Yukon) I’ve played hundreds of shows in Kingston and met so many amazing people as a result!
I am interested in this course because I would love to further understand the elements of a successful work relationship. I’ve had seven different jobs throughout my life, and I think it will be interesting to reflect on my experiences through the lens of this course. Hopefully I will be able to take this knowledge forward to my future jobs – it’ll be especially useful if I find myself in a managerial role somewhere down the road.

Hi Sean! That’s so cool that you’re from the Yukon. Why did you choose Queen’s? It’s great that you’ve used your interest in music to involve yourself in the community. Networking must be very important in the music industry, so it is great to see you so dedicated to it. I imagine the music industry is full of employment dynamics so being able to apply this course to your passion will surely benefit your future employment relationships. I agree that this course will provide an interesting opportunity to reflect on our experiences.

Hi Sean! The Yukon is a beautiful place, you are very lucky to live there. I did a three week canoe trip in the Yukon a few years ago. Music is such a great skill to have and brings so much joy throughout life. Do you write our own songs? Playing in a band can be a great way to meet people and feel connected to your community, which is super important. This course might also be helpful for you to learn about conflict management which would be an asset in terms of working with multiple bands and someday becoming a manager!

Nice hearing from you, old friend! We haven’t seen each other a lot this year and I hope that, by way of this course, we can change that! Because we are in different faculties, I never thought that we would end up in the same class, so it’ll be so interesting to see how your creativity from your artistic endeavours translates into your problem-solving assignments here. After years of putting it off, I finally decided to attend Vogue this year, so if you’re not in this production, I’d love to catch you there! If you are, I cannot wait to see your perform! Are you returning to the Yukon upon graduation? Let me know!
